This is the first part of an indefinite number of posts. I will attempt to sharpen your axe so you can trim away the excess Internet fat and help get what YOU want out of the web.
Google Alerts (Beta) are email notices that you can have sent to your inbox for whatever search terms you wish. When your chosen term appears in a news article, on a website or both it will be sent to your email address. For example, I have 'Nightingale Conant' as one of my many search terms. It's set up as a news alert and any time our name appears in an article I receive an email.
You can get what you want out of almost every online publication without having to read them all or spend your day surfing the web.
Some good uses of Google Alerts I found are: keeping up to date on the latest happenings in your industry, entertainment you enjoy, topical news items, hobbies you that interest you, or seeing if you neighbor is in the police blotter again.
Thanks for the great tip. I have been using Google Alerts since I read your tip the first time. It has been one of the ways I have been keeping up with current events in my industry.
